Rating/Warning: PG - mildly angsty

AN: Title from the fabulous Crash Test Dummies

As Jack lay alone in the dark, the Hub came alive around him.

The ghosts who lived in the walls appeared from nowhere, their faces and silhouettes dancing in the shadows.

Their voices came to him on the drafts that floated through the tunnels; their expired breaths through the drone and whine of the computers.

A century of his life was contained in the cold hard stone; a harsh tomb for his memories.

As a familiar warm body slipped into bed next to him the ghosts retreated once more and Jack lost himself in the steady heartbeat of the living.

These ladies are no ladies.

Alice and Emily, fine and beautiful in their elegant clothes, but sharp and ruthless in their actions.

I appear to be an experiment to them. They are fascinated by how many times I can die, how they can kill me, what my limits are and how long it takes for me to come back.

Some deaths are slow, some are quick. Sometimes I see it coming, others they take me by surprise.

But each time I revive, my screams are calmed and two pairs of hands and lips sooth the ache and fire of returning.

Sometimes he likes to drag it out.

Make himself wait.

Delay the satisfaction.

Draw out the sensations.

Build the anticipation.

He lets his senses be assaulted. Let’s himself be surrounded by the heat, obvious in this small space. Aromas curl themselves around him and he breathes so deeply he could make himself giddy. He wishes the scents were tangible so he could play them through his fingers.

And then, finally, that first taste. Exotic bitter and sweet and hot and dark explode on his tongue. The first coffee of the day is always the best and deserves the build up.

Sliver of Lover. Once overed by [info]emyrldlady

She’s not sure how it happened but sometimes she’s allowed back through.  Just long enough to visit, look, hope they know she loves them.

She’s not sure if anyone can see her on her visits, but with him, sometimes she feels like he does. It’s the way he pauses, seems to turn back, the way he shakes his head.

She tells herself that’s why she keeps coming to him over everyone else; just another experiment. But it’s not true. It’s because with eternity stretching out in front of her Jack is the only one she’d choose to spend it with.

He tried to be strong, stand firm, keep his ground, not back down. He couldn’t let himself be beaten, weakened, to submit to the pressure. He couldn’t be known as one who would cave.

But it was constant, always there, always nagging.

The other was relentless, pushing, repeating his demands over and over again.

It wore at him, ground him down and until his defences were lost.

“Alright Jack, you win! I’ve had enough. The thing with the hockey stick? Fine, we’ll do it tonight.”

“You’ll love it Ianto, I promise.”

“Whatever.” Ianto tried to look annoyed, but failed miserably.

AN: As this appears to be something of an obession of mine, if someone can make me a Ianto/hockey stick icon you will be bestowed with cookies and good fortune and a drabble of your choice.

It was beautiful; a moment so perfect that Tosh’s heart enveloped it as her eyes would feast on a work of art.

The look in his eyes, pouring deep into hers. The way his hand stilled as he passed the card to her, their fingers so close, yet not quite touching. The way he smiled; a smile she hadn’t seen before; a smile just for her. The way he paused, freezing that perfect moment in time.

But it wasn’t what he said. It was what he didn’t say that poured gold onto that perfect moment.

He only denied the apology.

As he exited the Hub Owen tried to work out why he had done it.

A simple thing; a spur of the moment decision. Smirking, laughing and mocking had suddenly given way to something he hadn’t expected.

But he hadn’t stopped talking; never stop talking. But keeping talking didn’t stop him not saying things. Didn’t stop him not saying what he should have said.

He’d seen the look in Tosh’s eyes. Seen the spark of realisation, the swell of hope.

The guilt gnawed at him already. What he didn’t say would be shattered by what he knew he’d never do.

Gwen’s been supervising the excavation and cleanup for days now. Watching as the remains of their lives are dug up, salvaged were possible, disposed of where not.

She’s seen so much come and go she hardly feels it anymore.

Then a keyboard is thrown onto a skip; broken, covered in mud and grime, keys missing. It’s so everyday, so normal something in her breaks again.

She can see Tosh’s hands dancing on the missing keys; she can see Owen brandishing it, wanting to play paper-ball tennis; sees Ianto shouting about sticky finger prints.

She wishes some things could stay buried.

“I could really go a jalfrezi.” Owen called, hinting heavily.

“Ooo, dinner. Good idea.” agreed Tosh.

“I’ve got a hankering for sweet and sour.” Gwen said.

“Can’t we go traditional for once? Good old fashioned fish and chips.” Jack chimed in.

“You know we can’t have any of those things.” Ianto said, a hint of concern in his voice.

His four colleagues looked at him. As he’d be the one organising dinner, it paid to humour him.

“Why not?” Owen asked finally.

Ianto looked confused at the question, as if the answer should have been obvious,

“It’s Tuesday; pizza day.”

It had been a bad day. One of those days when not enough lives had been saved and the guilt of living weighed heavily on Jack. Jack had died too; gasping into life amidst the wreckage.

Ianto knew what he needed. He needed to be made to feel; to feel something other than the ache in his heart; to feel how right it was to be alive and share his life with someone else.

Ianto walked into Jack’s office, closing the door firmly behind him.

Jack looked up. “Not now Ianto.”

Ianto crossed the room. “This is not about you.”

He looks down at his black polished shoes. His eye travels up his legs, clad in black woollen trousers. His gaze wanders to his crisp white shirt; spotless, but adorned with the markings and motifs that Cardiff Police require.

He looks at his warrant card, a perfect forgery.  He even has transfer papers. He’s done this properly. Wants to fit in, blend in, hide until the time is right.

He smirks at his reflection in his shoes. It’s a lot of effort to go to, but he knows it’ll be worth it.

PC John Hart. They’ll never see it coming.

They’ve lost everything.

Torchwood, where they worked, where their relationship grew, where they found love, is rubble.

They have been forced out of their home, forced from everything they know.

And it’s just the two of them left now.

He knows he has to be strong for both of them. He’s got to take control, ignore the pain in his heart, ignore everything screaming at him to stop, give up, fly from this place.

No, he needs to do whatever it takes to get them somewhere to hide from the world together.

He tries again.

“I really like that coat.”

He’d been on this planet long enough to know what was cool and what was not. He’d been here long enough to know what he liked and what he didn’t. And he knew he liked speed. He liked a lot of speed.

He liked to drive fast. Liked to sit in whatever car he had stolen, put his foot to the floor and feel the wind in his gills. He’d find a dance radio station, turn it up loud and cruise the streets looking cool.

He had to admit then that stealing the VW Beetle was not his best idea.

“You are nothing but an insect. A worm. You are so low beetles look down on you. A curling woodlouse has more back bone than you. A fly wouldn’t deign to land on you. A flea would rather go to a dog. Lice wouldn’t look twice at you. Ticks and blood suckers can smell the poison in your blood and refuse to contaminate themselves. You are the lowest of the low.”

Alice finished her tirade and tilted her chin defiantly in the air, hands on hips.

“That’s as maybe,” Jack replied, “But are you coming back to bed or not?”

She climbs higher into the air. Catching the thermals and air currents that lift and support her body, she’s carried out over the Bay.

The quiet one had let her out into the stormy night sky talking softly to her. She paid scant attention but recalls the words “storm” “Jack’s away” “never know”.

She tolerates him more than the others as he brings her treats, but she still cares little.

She looks down, seeing more of creatures that now make up her world and wonders if there is anything more tiny and insignificant that exists. She can’t believe there is.

“But it’s a bug.”

“I know it’s a bug.”

“Owen, it’s a six foot tall beetle.”

“That doesn’t make it any less injured.”

“But why is it still here?”

A sarcastic look was the only answer Gwen got.

“Seriously Owen, it’s been here for three days now. What are you doing with it?” Ianto chimed in.

Owen sighed. “It’s injured, I’m a doctor. It deserves as much care as anything else.”

Gwen and Ianto fell silent, suitably chastised, but Owen’s moral high ground didn’t last long. He grinned.

“Plus Harkness hates it. He hasn’t bothered me since it’s been here!”

She was contaminated. A bug was flowing through her system trying to disable her, make her slow, make her forget things, make her useless.

But she knew she was safe; knew she’d be okay because she had this Toshiko. Toshiko thought like her, understood her, cared for her.

She hummed happily. Toshiko was talking to her in a quiet soothing tone as she worked. Toshiko had told her once, late at night, softly like she was sharing a secret, that she found her electric sounds comforting.

So she sang to her now. A simple serenade of trust and binary affection.

Summary: Jack and Owen get competitive.

Owen stared at Jack with an intensity usually reserved for interrogating uncooperative prisoners.

His gaze was met by calm blue eyes, stoically giving nothing away.

They had been at this for what seemed like hours. They had been abandoned by the others long ago, but their combined stubbornness and need to win was driving the pair on.

Owen kept still, watching Jack’s face. Looking for something; a sign, a tell, something that would give him away. He narrowed his eyes.

He glanced again at his hand.

“You do. You must have.”

“I do not have any fours Owen; go fish.”

Ianto was aware he was being extra fastidious with the cleaning of his little kitchen area.  His hands worked to deftly dismantle and clean the coffee machine piece by piece; scrubbing each until it shone.

He scoured the work surface, making stains disappear, back turned to avoid the object he was hiding from.

He wondered if he’d ever be able to look at it again.

One daft little throw-away comment from the beautiful scientist whose friendship had lifted his life and who had died a true hero; one silly little comment and he cried at the sight of a toaster.
