Christine smiled as she put down the phone. It had been a good call, a very good call. One that she had been planning for a long time.
Months of discreetly scouring the right files, whispered conversations in the right ears, rumours started in the right offices. Money siphoned from where it wouldn't be missed for years, and ploughed into her own project. And none of it traceable back to her. Wilder had been easy. The man would sell his soul and all his remaining morals for the right price and it seemed she’d offered that. Once he'd found out who the ARC’s head of security was, she even saw him smile. Apparently she wasn't the only one who was making this personal.
Oh, and this was personal all right. James Lester: former lover and political sparring partner for years. In parallel careers, vying for the same jobs, the same status, the same power. It had got vicious and bloody. Not that either of their hands ever got tarnished of course. Well, not the victor's anyway.
Years spent looking over their shoulders, more so if they had won the last round. Revenge was always a certainty. Oh, James must have thought he was so safe when he’d secured such a top-secret role. Impervious to all intrusion or investigation. Well, this was the civil service. There was no such thing as impervious. It had taken time and not inconsiderable effort, but she had found out what he was up to. Found out all about the ARC and the anomaly project. At first the plan had simply been to make him fail. And make him fail so completely that there would be no bouncing back this time, no more sideways moves or second chances. End James Lester's career once and for all.
And then her enquiries had started to unearth more and more information about the project and she had instantly recognised that the power available to be taken stretched far beyond the ARC. It was the delicious cherry on the top that made the revenge all the sweeter.
And finally the phone call had come. The rumours had reached their desired destination and the predictable response had been swift. She was to go in over James’ head and oversee. And then the real game could begin. With Wilder at her side control would be hers, swiftly and efficiently. And James would know that as soon as she stepped over the threshold. He would recognise her revenge for what it was the moment he heard of her involvement. She couldn't wait to break the good news to him.
Christine smiled as she picked up the phone.
