Not Apologising

Title: Not Apologising
Characters: Ianto and PC Andy
Word count: 537
Rating/Warning: PG
Spoilers: None
AN - This was written for my lovely friend [info]shamazipan who requested a fic with PC Andy, Ianto and with the prompt "biscuits". That's what she asked for, this is what she got...

It had happened again. It had bloody well happened again. Andy stood in the middle of the Plass, in the rain, alone and fuming.

Bloody Torchwood.

The quiet one, Ianto, suddenly appeared at his side out of nowhere with a large umbrella that covered them both.

“If you’ve come to say you’re sorry it’s too little, too late.”

Ianto shrugged. “Fine. No apologies.”

Andy pressed his lips together in annoyance. He’d hoped for a bit more of a struggle.

He opened his mouth to retort when the handle of the umbrella was suddenly thrust at him and Andy instinctively grabbed it. A thermos appeared in Ianto’s hands, and after a few deft movements the umbrella was taken away from him again and a plastic cup of steaming coffee was instead pressed into his grasp.

“What’s this?”

“It’s absolutely not an apology.”

Andy considered the coffee for a moment. Damn it smelt good. But he wasn’t going to give in that easily. “It’s not much of a not-apology.”

He saw Ianto’s lips twitch into a slight smile and the other man dipped a hand into a jacket pocket, pulling out a packet.

“Biscuit?”

“Hob nob?”

Ianto gave him an insulted look. “You do not have hob nobs with coffee this good. It has to be ginger nuts.”

“We’re standing in the street in the rain, drinking coffee out of a thermos and you’re lecturing me on biscuit etiquette?”

“When we stop caring about the little things we may as well give up.” Ianto replied.

Andy paused, sipping his coffee and silently agreeing that ginger biscuits were indeed the best accompaniment to coffee this good.

“Your Captain, he’s a bit of a ginger nut isn’t he?”

Ianto raised an eyebrow and gave Andy a questioning look.

“You know. If the ginger nut is the god of the biscuit world then that’s what he would be.”

A full smile stretched across Ianto’s face and Andy saw him laugh for what may have been the first time.

“Oh Jack’s not a ginger nut. He’d be something chocolaty from one of those expensive tins you get at Christmas. Flashy, sweet, more-ish, and best for your health if you only had them once a year. Yet you can’t imagine life without them.”

Andy gave Ianto a sideways look, thoughtful for a moment before he spoke again.

“Gwen; now Gwen would be hob nob. Sweet, everyone loves them, but with those irritating bits that get stuck in your teeth. But, no matter how irritating they are, you always want more.”

Ianto nodded and refilled the other man’s cup, letting him talk.

“I s’pose you lot think I’d be rich tea. Plain and a bit simple.”

“But when it comes down to it, everyone likes a rich tea; they compliment everything. Rich teas are always there when you need them. You can rely on a rich tea.”

Andy sipped his coffee again, not sure how to reply.

“What about you?” he finally asked.

“Oh, I’d be one of those pink wafers.”

Andy looked up in surprise, caught Ianto’s gaze and saw the laughter dancing in his eyes. He couldn’t help but smile.

“Thanks for the coffee and the biscuits. And thank you for not apologising.”

"When we stop caring about the little things we may as well give up."

I loved that line SO much. And the biscuit comparisons. And Ianto's so brilliantly in character, always the caretaker, but subtly so. This is really lovely.

Oh thank you hon. Have some Connor squee as thanks :o)

I'm so pleased that you liked this and completely glompy that you like my Ianto. Thank you.

I love this. I can imagine both Andy and Ianto's face at the 'pink wafer' comment. Nothing like a good coffee and biscuit fic with added Andy.

Oh and you are going to post this to [livejournal.com profile] constable_jones aren't you?

Love this fic!

And the site - I haven't seen this one before. There's another PC andy site somewhere on LJ but it was pretty innactive. And there be stories there that I haven't read before!! WooHoo!

[identity profile] aeron-lanart.livejournal.com 2010-07-27 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
You wouldn't by any chance be referring to [livejournal.com profile] pcandy_love would you? Best way for these comms to not be inactive is for people to write PC Andy stuff (which I don't really bar 1 fic so I shouldn't moan).

cute! :-) I can see Ianto caring for Andy, Gwen takes him for granted ...

[identity profile] jooles34.livejournal.com 2010-07-27 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. Ianto knows what it feels like to be on the sidelines so it makes sense that he would be the one to try to make things better.

[identity profile] firefly124.livejournal.com 2010-07-27 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, very nice! I love the biscuit comparisons, though now I'm dying to know Ianto's logic for the pink wafer comment. LOL

[identity profile] jooles34.livejournal.com 2010-07-27 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you very much! Um, pink wafer logic...um...Well, they're everyone's favourite aren't they?

Ahaha. That was so cute in a totally non-gay friendship way!
I loved the descriptions of how everyone was compared to food. ^_^

Great biscuit analogies and so true. I loved the description of Jack and Gwen with the irritating bits but Ianto as a pink wafer more of a custard cream for me - an every day sort of biscuit that you might take for granted but when you bite into one you can't help but eat the packet - or is that just me!

[identity profile] jooles34.livejournal.com 2010-07-27 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, custard cream is so true! The pink wafer thing was more about Ianto messing around and doing his usual not exposing himself thing, but I think you have it spot on!

Thanks for commenting, glad you liked it.

Ha ha, I love the biscuit theory! Now is Ianto one of the pink wafers with the pink cream, or the ones with the marshmallow?

You can always rely on a rich tea, very true and wise words.

[identity profile] jooles34.livejournal.com 2010-07-27 03:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee, thank you! You'd have to ask Ianto that, I have no idea where he was going with the pink wafer thing...

And nice to meet someone who understands the true value of the humble rich tea :o)

“When we stop caring about the little things we may as well give up.” Ianto replied.

“We’re standing in the street in the rain, drinking coffee out of a thermos and you’re lecturing me on biscuit etiquette?”

That line is bloody brilliant!

“When we stop caring about the little things we may as well give up.”

Why do I get the feeling that Ianto's snark knows no bounds? *grin*

LOVE the pink wafers bit, and all the biscuit comparisons, and Ianto not apologising, making me wonder why exactly he's there. :-) Thanks for the lovely story!

[identity profile] jooles34.livejournal.com 2010-08-05 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, thank you so much for the lovely comment. I'm sop pleased you liked those lines. I love Andy's dry humour and Ianto's...well, Iantoness! I'm so pleased you think I've captured these. Thank you for commenting and I'm glad you liked this.

I ADORE this fic! Just what I needed today. :D

You get bonus points for using the phrase "biscuit etiquette". Mmm, biscuits....

*hugs* So pleased you liked this and that it helped with your day. Thank you.

Oh lol!! The biscuit comparisons ...
imo best to a good coffee is something dark chocolaty, but then that's good even without coffee. Ginger is better with tea I think. Ok, enough of tastes and speculations - absolutely lovely story. Cute and funny and - interesting. *g*
Thanks so much!

[identity profile] jooles34.livejournal.com 2010-08-05 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
You're disagreeing with the coffee king? You are braver than I! ;o)

love biscuits with my coffee and love them both too, lovely sweet little fic.
next time I go to England I look for pink wafers cause I really don't know what they look like. But I know what French biscuit I imagined reading your lines.
