It had happened again. It had bloody well happened again. Andy stood in the middle of the Plass, in the rain, alone and fuming.
Bloody Torchwood.
The quiet one, Ianto, suddenly appeared at his side out of nowhere with a large umbrella that covered them both.
“If you’ve come to say you’re sorry it’s too little, too late.”
Ianto shrugged. “Fine. No apologies.”
Andy pressed his lips together in annoyance. He’d hoped for a bit more of a struggle.
He opened his mouth to retort when the handle of the umbrella was suddenly thrust at him and Andy instinctively grabbed it. A thermos appeared in Ianto’s hands, and after a few deft movements the umbrella was taken away from him again and a plastic cup of steaming coffee was instead pressed into his grasp.
“What’s this?”
“It’s absolutely not an apology.”
Andy considered the coffee for a moment. Damn it smelt good. But he wasn’t going to give in that easily. “It’s not much of a not-apology.”
He saw Ianto’s lips twitch into a slight smile and the other man dipped a hand into a jacket pocket, pulling out a packet.
“Biscuit?”
“Hob nob?”
Ianto gave him an insulted look. “You do not have hob nobs with coffee this good. It has to be ginger nuts.”
“We’re standing in the street in the rain, drinking coffee out of a thermos and you’re lecturing me on biscuit etiquette?”
“When we stop caring about the little things we may as well give up.” Ianto replied.
Andy paused, sipping his coffee and silently agreeing that ginger biscuits were indeed the best accompaniment to coffee this good.
“Your Captain, he’s a bit of a ginger nut isn’t he?”
Ianto raised an eyebrow and gave Andy a questioning look.
“You know. If the ginger nut is the god of the biscuit world then that’s what he would be.”
A full smile stretched across Ianto’s face and Andy saw him laugh for what may have been the first time.
“Oh Jack’s not a ginger nut. He’d be something chocolaty from one of those expensive tins you get at Christmas. Flashy, sweet, more-ish, and best for your health if you only had them once a year. Yet you can’t imagine life without them.”
Andy gave Ianto a sideways look, thoughtful for a moment before he spoke again.
“Gwen; now Gwen would be hob nob. Sweet, everyone loves them, but with those irritating bits that get stuck in your teeth. But, no matter how irritating they are, you always want more.”
Ianto nodded and refilled the other man’s cup, letting him talk.
“I s’pose you lot think I’d be rich tea. Plain and a bit simple.”
“But when it comes down to it, everyone likes a rich tea; they compliment everything. Rich teas are always there when you need them. You can rely on a rich tea.”
Andy sipped his coffee again, not sure how to reply.
“What about you?” he finally asked.
“Oh, I’d be one of those pink wafers.”
Andy looked up in surprise, caught Ianto’s gaze and saw the laughter dancing in his eyes. He couldn’t help but smile.
“Thanks for the coffee and the biscuits. And thank you for not apologising.”

Why do I get the feeling that Ianto's snark knows no bounds? *grin*
LOVE the pink wafers bit, and all the biscuit comparisons, and Ianto not apologising, making me wonder why exactly he's there. :-) Thanks for the lovely story!

Date: 2010-07-27 08:56 pm (UTC)imo best to a good coffee is something dark chocolaty, but then that's good even without coffee. Ginger is better with tea I think. Ok, enough of tastes and speculations - absolutely lovely story. Cute and funny and - interesting. *g*
Thanks so much!
