When it came to rough and tumble at home with his brothers, he'd been happier reading or chasing bugs in the garden.

He was Mr Always Picked Last in games. Well, when he hadn't faked a letter of ill health’d excuse from his mum anyway.

He'd even managed to be the odd one out on his course, which should have been full of people like him.

Nick slapped him on the back as they left the incursion site and Stephen draped a casual arm around both their shoulders. Connor smiled the smile of the belonging.

Nick felt his eye twitch as another three subjects were introduced to the conversation.

But it was the tapping that finally…

“For god’s sake Connor!” Nick exploded, “Will you just sit still for one minute, be quiet and let me think!” He turned and stalked from the room.

Connor watched him leave. “I think someone should put him on decaff.”

At that moment Stephen stepped out of the locker room and joined them. Claudia looked at the tight white top that stretched over his torso, down to the tan jodhpurs that left nothing to the imagination, and onto the sculpted leather riding boots that clung to his calves.

One had saved him from a life of mundane academia; a world where he would never have been taken seriously despite his brain. The other had pulled him from a life of lonely nights into a relationship that was so wrong, but worked.

They had both shown him love and he loved in return.

He’d better stop them from killing each other then, he supposed.

But even Lester looked pleased. Connor had been told in no uncertain terms that Lester was taking all the credit with the PM; but Connor didn’t care about the PM.

What was putting the beaming smile on Connor’s face was a hand on his shoulder and three words in that Scottish accent.

“Good work son.”

AN: A couple of weeks ago I asked for some Connor character study promts. I got a few great ones and have started on a couple, but then I happened to see this ep on TV this moring and this wrote itself. This was requested by

prehistoriccat, so this is for you. It's such a wonderfully crafted and acted couple of scenes, I hope I've done it justice for you.
AN2 – I’ve alluded to this in fics before, but thought it might be handy to spell it out. In my personal canon Connor’s family didn’t understand his love of dinosaurs and his academic bent, so he grew up lacking in support and somewhat distanced from them, and this is why he falls so completely under Cutter’s spell as mentor and father figure.

( Another explosion rocks the building and Connor suddenly knows. )
