Connor and Abby stood side by side and watched with pride as the pair played happily together.
Seeing them having fun, enjoying being with each other, the innocent, carefree pleasure evident on their faces made them both smile. Knowing that the pair was safe, that that it was the two of them that were providing a happy and loving home gave them both a warm and content feeling.
Then Connor’s face fell, “Um… what are they doing? Should they be doing that?”
Abby grinned, “Oh that’s perfectly normal, but I think that means Sid and Nancy aren’t brother and sister.”

Lester had watched Connor for four days. Four days in which the young man hadn’t slept for more than a couple of hours and barely left the lab to eat. With a heavy heart he went to do what had to be done.

“I have to do this for Cutter.”
“Do you want his legacy to be you being driven mad through exhaustion?”
Connor flinched and Lester regretted the necessity of his harsh tone. Then Connor’s shoulders slumped.
“No. he was worth more.”
Lester watched him leave. “So are you.”

Claudia walked into the bedroom to find her partner sitting on the bed sniffing and slowly turning pages of a well thumbed novel.
She leant against the door frame, watching; her presence completely unnoticed. Tissues lay scattered on the bed and a hand reached out for another one as a further sniffle was let out.
“I don’t know why you continue to read that over and over. You cry every time.”
Her partner looked up and turned the book glancing at the cover. “Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit is a classic.”
“I know that Nick, but really, every time?”

He’d held a number of postings - soldiers with ambition and the brains to realise them rarely stayed in the same place for long - under a lot of superior officers. Joining the ARC had been a career choice, but the idea of a civilian boss filled him with dread.
But Lester was not what he’d expected. Tough, ruthless, took no shit, but would do anything for his team. It had been easy, and an honour, to play Wilder and Johnson on his behalf.
And when he lost his self-belief he’d been repaid by Lester’s unerring loyalty, faith and friendship.
