Right. I take no responsibility for this what-so-ever.

In November I arrived late at a gathering of Denialists and they were already in full flow. The first thing that was thrown at me (after vodka) was the idea of Lester as a cat-nun. Yes, like the Doctor Who ones. It broke me, which just seemed to encourage the others. What no one could quite work out though was how it could have happened. The broken part of my brain then came up with an explanation and immediately wished it hadn’t. There was goading yesterday (you know who you are) so I have finally written it. I blame a lot of people, but mostly [livejournal.com profile] lsellersfic

Lester stood in his office, hands on hips and a scowl on his face. The anomaly sparkled in front of him, framed perfectly by his office door. His team stood on the other side, unable to get into him, and he stood trapped in his office.

He would never be able to explain what drove him to do what he did next.

Novice Hurst stood in the far future, in a place that had once been known as London. She had no way of knowing that the chapel she had been worshiping in stood on the long-since gone ruins of a building that had once been so important. She didn’t know that, and she didn’t know what she was standing in front of. It was large and hung in the air; fractured golden light spinning silently in front of her.

She’d never seen one before, but she knew what she needed to do.

Lester was aware of the frantic calls of his team, but the same thing that compelled him to step into the glittering shards also bade him ignore them.

Novice Hurst had no one to witness her movements, no one to desperately call her back. But as something inside her drew her forwards and through the light, she wouldn’t have listened even if they had.

The Universe sighed as fate and physics finally came together. At different times in the same space, two figures stepped into the same second in time. DNA mixed and merged; blended and changed. Humanity and catkind forced to come together and exist in one being. Minds and consciousness fought a split-second battle they didn’t know they were fighting and one won.

From the other side of the anomaly a new being, a news species, emerged.

Lester was aware something had happened. He stepped into the new world on the other side of the anomaly and looked down at the robes he was now dressed in. His hands raised to trace the outline of a stiffened wimple on his head, then lingered across his face, smoothing over fine fur.

He scowled.

“Perfect. Bloody purrrr-fect.”
