She was contaminated. A bug was flowing through her system trying to disable her, make her slow, make her forget things, make her useless.

But she knew she was safe; knew she’d be okay because she had this Toshiko. Toshiko thought like her, understood her, cared for her.

She hummed happily. Toshiko was talking to her in a quiet soothing tone as she worked. Toshiko had told her once, late at night, softly like she was sharing a secret, that she found her electric sounds comforting.

So she sang to her now. A simple serenade of trust and binary affection.

“But it’s a bug.”

“I know it’s a bug.”

“Owen, it’s a six foot tall beetle.”

“That doesn’t make it any less injured.”

“But why is it still here?”

A sarcastic look was the only answer Gwen got.

“Seriously Owen, it’s been here for three days now. What are you doing with it?” Ianto chimed in.

Owen sighed. “It’s injured, I’m a doctor. It deserves as much care as anything else.”

Gwen and Ianto fell silent, suitably chastised, but Owen’s moral high ground didn’t last long. He grinned.

“Plus Harkness hates it. He hasn’t bothered me since it’s been here!”

She climbs higher into the air. Catching the thermals and air currents that lift and support her body, she’s carried out over the Bay.

The quiet one had let her out into the stormy night sky talking softly to her. She paid scant attention but recalls the words “storm” “Jack’s away” “never know”.

She tolerates him more than the others as he brings her treats, but she still cares little.

She looks down, seeing more of creatures that now make up her world and wonders if there is anything more tiny and insignificant that exists. She can’t believe there is.

“You are nothing but an insect. A worm. You are so low beetles look down on you. A curling woodlouse has more back bone than you. A fly wouldn’t deign to land on you. A flea would rather go to a dog. Lice wouldn’t look twice at you. Ticks and blood suckers can smell the poison in your blood and refuse to contaminate themselves. You are the lowest of the low.”

Alice finished her tirade and tilted her chin defiantly in the air, hands on hips.

“That’s as maybe,” Jack replied, “But are you coming back to bed or not?”

He’d been on this planet long enough to know what was cool and what was not. He’d been here long enough to know what he liked and what he didn’t. And he knew he liked speed. He liked a lot of speed.

He liked to drive fast. Liked to sit in whatever car he had stolen, put his foot to the floor and feel the wind in his gills. He’d find a dance radio station, turn it up loud and cruise the streets looking cool.

He had to admit then that stealing the VW Beetle was not his best idea.
