Goodbye daydream believer

I don’t normally do such things, but prompted by jaynedoll‘s tribute to Davy Jones and the Monkees, I decided to come and do my own, but a little different. And it’s not exactly eloquent.

The news about Davy’s death today has upset me; I can’t, and won’t, pretend it hasn’t.
My mum is a huge Monkees fan, and as has been established, my mum and I have very little in common. But I was brought up on the Monkees and have an in-built love of the band. We used to play the cassettes in the car on the two-hour drive to my Grandparents every other weekend; singing along together.

I loved Davy Jones, mum loved Micky Dolenz. I remember my mum showing me a fan letter she wrote to Micky when she was a kid, but never sent. I remember reading it so clearly; it made my mum human. Sounds stupid, but I really realised for the first time that my mum had been a kid too.

When I was about 21 we went to see the Monkees in concert. Again, for two people that rarely do things together, it’s a great memory.

And the Monkees gave me those memories and that link with my mum. And I will always be grateful.
