It was one of those foolish moments borne of youthful enthusiasm and idealised romance. We met in a crowded airport departure lounge, grounded because of snow. Bonding over backpacks and budget travel books we decided it was fate. Fate had brought us together in this airport, at this time. Fate had brought in the bad weather to keep us together. And fate had us bound for different continents to pull us apart again.

We decided, him and I, to allow fate to play one more part. He slipped a five pound note from his pocket and we wrote our telephone numbers across the faces of monarchs and models of inspiration. With a solemnity that betrayed our innocence we exchanged the money for two last coffees together. If fate decided our love was meant to be, the money would find one of us again and we would be reunited.

Then fate cleared the snow and with tears and whispered promises we flew apart.

Married now and with a babe in my arms I live a life of adequate normalcy. Fate and gods had no part to play; but right person, right time and I find myself happy.

But still, each time I hear the words “here’s your change” and a blue note passes across the counter to me, a prickle of excitement tickles at my neck and, unbidden, I search for numbers fate doesn’t want me to find.
