[livejournal.com profile] not_from_stars amused at work who asked for Abby/Connor, "It's raining again", music, candles, powere outage.

“It looks like it’s raining again.”

Abby prevented herself from rolling her eyes, but couldn’t help but grin at Connor’s amazing habit of being able to state the obvious.

“Looks like an evening in then.” she suggested. “I could cook.”

Connor looked surprised, almost on the edge of startled.

“You’d cook for me?”

“Yes. Is that so surprising? That I would be nice to you?” she teased.

“Well, you know, cooking, for us, like both of us, it’s not something we do is it? That you do I mean. Not, not that you wouldn’t or that it wouldn’t be nice, or that you’re not nice, but it’s just that…”

“Connor, do you want to stop now before you dig the hole any deeper?”

“Yes please.”

She smiled at him and Connor smiled back, his face going from sheepish to broad grin as he realised he wasn’t really in trouble.

Connor jumped as a sudden flash of lightning lit up the room and was followed almost instantly by a clap of thunder.

“What the…that came out of nowhere.”

“Storm’s right overhead,” Abby confirmed glancing out of the window at the dark, overcast sky. Another flash of lighting and peal of thunder confirmed what she said. A second later the lights overhead flickered and went out.

“It’s a power cut.”

In the dark Abby didn’t bother disguising her eye roll this time.

“Yes it’s a power cut. Which could put a dampener on dinner, as I have all electric.”

“Oh. Ah. So you’re not cooking for us then. I was right.” Abby to could hear his grin in the dark.

“Oh, shut up.”

“Tell you what, as I still don’t know where anything is in this flat, I will brave the storm and go to the chippy if you hunt for candles and get us some light in here.”

“The chippy? But there’s a power cut. They won’t have power either.”

“The one on the corner has its own generator.”

“How do you even know that? Wait, I don’t care. You’re really willing to go out in this?”

“Can I steal your waders?”

Abby laughed.

After a few minutes of blind fumbling, muttering, and cursing from Connor and muffled giggling from Abby, Connor left the flat wrapped from head to toe in waterproof gear, and Abby started feeling her way to where she knew where her candles were.

She made relatively good progress, knowing her flat intimately enough that she could navigate around it even in the dark. Her way was only hampered a couple of times by detritus that Connor had left strewn around. He may have moved in against her better judgement, but, despite his mess and general clumsiness, she couldn’t deny that he was starting to grow on her. More than that in fact, she was starting to become rather fond of him. And Abby was fairly sure that Connor had similar feelings towards her.

She was also rather convinced though that it would take nothing short of a sledge hammer to make him realise the feelings went both ways.

Abby grabbed a couple of candles and a box of matches and placed them, lit, on the table. With a little light in the open space, she went back and pulled out some more candles. Abby put them on the table before standing back and looking at the effect.

Suddenly an idea struck her and she smiled.

Connor scrunched up his eyes against the wind and rain, paper-bag of fish and chips for two clutched against his chest, under the protection of the waterproof jacket he was wearing. He scurried through the bad weather, trying to get back to the flat as quickly as possibly.

He burst through the front door and ran up the stairs, stripping his sodden outer layers as he went. Walking into the flat he was struck by how much lighter it was now. He stopped short and looked around.

He had no idea Abby even owned that many candles. Why did girls own so many candles?

The room flickered brightly with them, hiding the flat’s usual harsh lines and angles, and casting a pleasant yellow glow. He saw the table laid for two with a couple of candles in the centre.

Connor walked over with the food and hovered by the table, not sure what to do.

“I’m back.” he called out to the empty room. Abby appeared then, changed out of her jeans and t-shirt, now wearing a very pretty dress. She was carrying her battery operated travel speakers and iPod. Setting them down on the edge of the table Abby pressed play and the strains of Massive Attack entered the room.

“This looks nice. Are we expecting company?”

Abby cocked her head to one side.

“I actually worry about you sometimes. Now for god’s sake put the chips down and come here.”
