Random stuff for a Monday

It’s been a bit of a frustrating and doom and gloom day in Jooles Towers, but I am bored of whinging, so let’s celebrate some completely random, utterly useless in real life, but happy-making stuff.
Most of my flist have a common connection, which is being part of fandom of one type or another, at one time or another. Share with me, and the group, your best and/or most embarrassing fandom moments. And take that anyway you will! A brilliant fic you have read, an amazing comment you’ve been given if you write, someone you have met, whatever.
For my part, other than the fantastic friends I have made through fandom, the highlight of my fandom career is without doubt being clever at Ben Miller last year in a Q&A about his film Huge. As well as wanting to lick him, I really respect his talent and his intelligence and holding my own in a conversation about film theory – my subject – with him was just brilliant.
My most embarrassing is quite a recent one. A couple of weeks ago I met Drew-Ashlyn Cunningham from My Transsexual Summer and was so utterly taken with her that I just gibbered. Complete incoherent mess. I was supposed to be interviewing her, but that went out of the window as I lost the ability to talk like a human being. Most of it centred around her being an inspiration and the phrase “I think you’re amazing” was uttered an embarrassing number of times. I also told her I loved her legs. Thankfully she was incredibly sweet, called me lovely and gave me a big hug. And her Q&A had been so comprehensive I didn’t have any other questions for her anyway.
Any takers to liven a dreary Monday?

Date: 2012-02-20 06:01 pm (UTC)The most embarrassing.......take your pick, announcing loudly that 'John Barrowman likes COCK!' as James walked out to his car, 'Gayest man EVER!' again loudly to Gabby as GDL looked over, any interaction with GDL for that matter, or JM! *is rubbish*

Date: 2012-02-20 06:43 pm (UTC)I toddles up to ask a question... "Nick, would you like to borrow my fan?" his answer was something along the lines of "Oh god, yes please!" so I lent him my super duper wafty black fan for which he was eternally grateful (and apparently told me I was brilliant but as I wasn't facing him at the time I didn't hear that).
Never going anywhere without a fan has stood me in good stead on a number of occasions (I lent a fan to Katy Wix one Hub too) but that's my bestest fan moment.
Embarrassing? Apart from random drunk moments I don't think I have any. Telling GDL to shift his arse out me way was funny rather than embarrassing due to other people's double takes - Gareth moved of course, and laughed at me in the process while complaining about bloody scousers.
I bumped into Drew in Illamasqua in Leeds when ooing and ahhing over pale foundation that didn't make me look orange - she laughingly commented about loving looking orange, was rather funny.

Date: 2012-02-20 06:54 pm (UTC)Worst fandom moment - hmm...not really sure tbh.

Date: 2012-02-20 07:08 pm (UTC)Also it's hard to remember how much older I am than him, and well, most of the men in my fandom (I'm even older than JB) and that I sort of end up looking just plain creepy sometimes.
I do believe there is another potentially embarrassing situation brewing. This past weekend at Gally a friend (a man) spoke quite at length to Danielle about my love for him and that he should be very flattered to have a woman like me fawning over him and that he should definitely go to HW to meet me and quote Shakespeare in Italian to me to make me melt.
*hides in corner* How the hell am I supposed to act professional at HW with THAT hanging over me?

Date: 2012-02-20 07:10 pm (UTC)There are so many wonderful things that have happened to me through fandom the greatest being all the supportive, intelligent and funny people I have gotten to know.
One of the coolest things to happen was my last visit to comic con with the quilt I made with beautiful pics of JB contributed by many fans, most from @susiebantam and getting John' signiture on it, his picture with it and a surprise hug from him!

Date: 2012-02-20 07:41 pm (UTC)After he'd looked slightly startled for a moment, he insisted on shaking hands and said, "Hi, I'm Ben."
AS IF WE DIDN'T KNOW WHO HE WAS! As if we hadn't travelled all the way to Bath and sat through two hours of Shakespeare and waited at the stage-door for twenty minutes solely to see him, he still felt the need to properly introduce himself. It was quite surreal. And also muchly of the squee-making, due to him being the most friendly, polite, and generally adorable man ever.
I think that's actually about it for my fangirly moments. I've never really gone to cons or stage-doored actors prior to Primeval, so it's all rather new. And to be honest, it's probably a good thing I've never met A-LP. I have this vague suspicion I might just squeak incoherently and flail at him, which would just be embarassing...
Yey for this post. Just remembering that moment has made me all happy and smiley :-)

Date: 2012-02-20 07:47 pm (UTC)Surprisingly, I was slightly less embarrassing with GDL. No, Mr. Owen received all of my ridiculousness.
Pictures with him also included Ian McNeice and Tommy Knight. I didn't particularly care about them much, so I asked one of the handlers/organizers if I could have a picture with "just Kai, please?"
I asked very very quietly, so as not to cause a scene. And then this woman says, "I don't know. I need to ask Pat." So she goes to ask Pat, who has to ask Harrison, who has to ask Clark Kent (can you tell I don't remember these people's names?), who has to shout across the room, "Can this girl take a picture with Kai? Is that allowed?"
Meanwhile, Kai is laughing and winking at me, Tommy Knight had this bemused smile on his face, and Ian McNeice proceeds to make fun of me for the rest of the convention, every time I see him.
The next day, I accidentally followed Kai out of the hotel, because I wanted a cigarette, and said the thing I usually say when I get behind someone I've seen over the course of a short period of time: "Oh, I'm following you!" I was...mortified.
I also demanded poetry from both of them. And played pterodactyl catch. And told Kai he threw like a girl in front of a large audience of people. I have no idea.
One of the best fandom moments, I think, is a sort of montage of all of the fandom people I've met in the US. Hell, I took my first plane ride ever across the country to meet one. :D Just the support of people has been great, both in writing and RL stuff. It's absolutely brilliant! :D

Date: 2012-02-20 08:22 pm (UTC)Most embarrassing: Same tour, in an elevator when Warren Cucarrulo walks in (substandard replacement for original guitarist Andy Taylor) and I'm wearing a Duran Duran shirt that basically says "loyal to the original crew" or some such. Luckily I was dumbstruck for the whole ride down or it could've been worse.

Date: 2012-02-20 08:43 pm (UTC)Most embarassing moment... Ahm... Other than utter silences when getting signatures, so far *touches wood* I've managed not to trip, fall, say something inappropriate or any of my other "fears related to being in public", so I'm going to count myself lucky.
Funniest one, still goes to GDL, on a Sunday morning. I produced my photo, with post-it with my name on it. He proceeded to move post-it out of the way and stare at me with a smile and say something along the lines of "who do I make it to?". I smiled back, pointed at post-it he had just moved. He laughed, and said something along the lines of "third time I've done that, and it's not even ten in the morning". I managed (barely) not to say anything regarding the difficulties of keeping a working brain when one has been up till the morning in the bar...

Date: 2012-02-20 08:49 pm (UTC)Also the 1st time I met Richey & Nicky from the Manics.
Meeting Amanda/Brian from The Dresden Dolls.
Being sexually propositioned by a member of Guns N' Roses (the original line-up) & turning him down.
Meeting Harrison Ford who was lovely.
Getting tweets off Primeval cast members *g*
Most embarrassing/worst moment - that would be a very long list. Manics fandom was like the fandom equivalent of 10 tours of duty of Vietnam.
It's embarrassing when you try to talk to someone you admire and find some sort of common ground and they just blank you/act like you're a crazed stalker or groupie.

Date: 2012-02-21 01:48 am (UTC)I don't know what category that falls into!
And like everyone else I've met a lot of amazing people through fandom.
Oh, and then there was the time in Boston at a con when my friend and I were at the public computer in the hotel looking at my Lj (remember when I had all those pictures on the sidebar) and GDL and Gemma were standing right behind us. I um-hmmm-ed to my friend and we turned and Gareth said something about the printer. Um...yeah...
And then there was the time Jared Leto called me an Old Timer and had the nerve to ask me how old I was. I just told him "let's just say older than you..."

Date: 2012-02-21 08:47 pm (UTC)Meeting James Marsters at a signing session in a little comic shop near where I work in Leeds. He was so lovely.
Meeting Ben Mansfield in Bath- gorgeous, and completely adorable!
Meeting the other primeval_denial folks on the various meetups.
And a comment left on my journal: she said that she loved my fic and it was the whole reason she'd joined livejournal in the first place! I thought that was so sweet.
