So, I watched the Christmas Invasion for the first time in aaaages last night with my mate, and I had one “ooooo! Geek alert!” moment and one moment of complete confusion. I’m expecting either facepalming and “get a life” or “OH MY GOD YES” for the geek moment and hoping for an explanation for the confusion.

“Ooooooo!” moment:

When Harriet Jones introduces the scientist Daniel Llewellyn to Alex, she says (something like), “He is my right hand man. Never hand one before, but I quite like it.” he replies “I quite like it too.” And there is a look. The way this whole little bit is played out is very similar to Jack introducing Ianto to Gwen and therefore caused a little moment of “Yip! It’s the first boss and butler moment!”; it felt like a bit of a prelude. My friend agreed, though she may have just been being polite as I was about to cook her food…

So, the confusion:

Shortly after this moment Harriet asks Mr Unit Man (am rubbish with names) if Torchwood have done anything yet. He replies that they are working on it, but they have “just lost a third of their people.”

Is this an incident we know about? I’m going to assume that they are talking about Torchwood One, but it’s pre the battle of Canary Wharf isn’t it? Have I got my timelines completely screwed? Have I missed something important? Or is it just a throwaway line? Or have the times lines gone back on themselves and this is actually just post Exit Wounds?!

My mate was as confused as I was and I was attempting to explain the timeline as I thought it, and then she started asking about Jack’s timeline and I tried explaining that too, and that may have been when my brain melted.

Oh, and a little extra something:

I have been saying this for years, then found it as a headline in my local paper. WIN!

have you asked this timeline question at the Doctor Who community ( http://community.livejournal.com/doctorwho/ ) yet? I'm sure they can help (or confuse you even more ;) ) I must confess now that you've mentioned it, I'm as confused as you about it. Ah, well, RTD and Timelines ... :D

Torchwood have lost a third of their people because they're standing on the roof, as with a third of the population of Earth ;)

You're a genius, I am an idiot, that is so stupidly simple.
Thank you.

dang somoene beat me to it. Yep, they're up on the roof. Someone once did a fic where Ianto was one of them up on the roof. Don't ask me which fic, I read entirely too much.

I used the Tardis Index File (A Doctor Who Wiki)for Ianto's Journey. I didn't keep the link but its quite detailed and they point out inconsistencies as well.

There are a couple of good TW timelines - I know I asked for one over at Torchwood institute and got several responses (again didn't keep the link).

The most confusing thing is that Dr. Who dates are always one year in the future while TW dates are present time.

And I have NO idea what the 1/3 of the team is in reference to.

re timelines... this is the one I've been using kinda forever: http://lefaym.livejournal.com/22789.html - it's brilliant

and the 1/3rd I'd say refers to the people pulled onto the roof - as apparently 1/3rd of people have that blood group..

1/3 of Torchwood London (for who needs those other slackers) is on the roof because 1/3 pc the populace has that blood type - that's why they lost part of their workforce. This is pre- Canary Wharf and pre S1 of Torchwood (Cardiff). By them.going through the debris at Canary Wharf is how Jack got his "Doctor detector" (the *right* hand).

Torchwood was supposed to be "a couple of years in the future" but CoE completely muddled it by putting down actual dates on newspapers and such.
