Lester extracted himself from under the bed, dusting off his knees and elbows as he stood. He took in Connor’s very pleased with himself grin.

“No spider?”

“No spider.”

“So this whole little performance was just to get me to rescue you?”

“And the thing with taking off the tie and getting sweaty.”

Lester reached up and started to pull gently at his tie.

“I think you should be more worried about not having someone to save you from me, because, as you seem to be so fond of it, I’m going to give you something to really scream about.”

“Don’t tell me you’re scared of that?”

“Not scared, just a little...wary.”

“You run at raptors, yet a spider makes you “wary”?”

“Wary, yes. But not scared.”

“Shame. If you were scared I might have had to become all ‘macho’ and tried to save you.”

The room is suddenly full of pause.

“Would you have to take your tie off?”

“Undoubtedly. Might even work up a bit of a sweat in the fight.”

The air suddenly thickens.

“Have I ever told you I’m terrified of spiders? I mean, really. Arachnophobic . Terrible.”

“Connor.”

“Yes James.”

“It’s already gone.”

“Oh.”
